I have been using E71x with the $15 plan since May, so far AT&T seems be oblivious.

They have my IMEI as an old motorola SLVR

I’ve heard that ATT has a new data policy. As of September 6, all smartphones must be on the $ 30 data plan – even unlocked E71 phones. How do they monitor this? What happens if someone opens a $ 15 medianet (unlimited) data plan with an ATT branded phone and then decides 2-months later they don’t like the phone and swaps the sim card out for use in the E71. Can ATT monitor the change of phone on their systems? (i.e. assuming the new phone is matched up with the old IMEI number. Can they monitor usage?

As long as you have an unlocked phone then I think the best option is to just buy a local sim card for use abroad. Makes reservations and keeping track of friends easy and less expensive.

Thanks for the update! Hopefully they will see the light with the lower priced plans..Meanwhile, I have been waiting too long for the E71x, may have to buy the unlocked E71 or E63..

So I had at&t switch me back to an old Motorola phone I had and activated the $15 unlimited data plan and then put the sim back in my palm centro and it has been working for 2 days now. Not sure if they will ever know what phone the sim is really in.

Hmm.. I have read accounts of ppl getting the 15 $/mo plan from AT&T with unlocked E71 phones purchased on amazon and other websites. i will have to test the 30-15 switch myself…

So is the theory that if att does not know you have what they call a “PDA” phone then the data plan is only $15 a month?

I just went through this with ATT where their online site thought I had an old Nokia and was letting me choose the $15 data plan but the back end system somewhere knew I had a palm centro and denied the change.
